A Million Tonnes of Carrots, But How Much Nourishment for New Zealand?
Juice Products NZ recently celebrated juicing its one‑millionth metric tonne of carrots — a milestone that showcases the productivity of South Canterbury’s growers. But from a food‑systems perspective, it also exposes a deeper imbalance. JP‑NZ is wholly owned by a Japanese conglomerate, meaning the land, water, and labour are local, while the profits and almost all of the product flow offshore. New Zealand carries the environmental burden of intensive production, yet the nourishment and financial value largely leave the country. At the same time, many households here struggle to afford fresh, healthy food. This milestone isn’t just a success story; it’s a reminder to ask who truly benefits from our food system, and whether it’s serving the people who sustain it.
