Taking Practical Steps Toward Food Security

Communities across Otago and Aotearoa are taking action to strengthen local food systems in the face of rising costs and ongoing pressure on household budgets. On the Peninsula, residents are invited to a Community Food Resilience Hui on Sunday 3 May, a chance to come together, share kai, and begin shaping a collective plan for a more secure local food future. Nationally, supermarket reform is back in the spotlight. NZ First has proposed a major restructure of Foodstuffs, aiming to boost competition in a sector where the Commerce Commission has identified significant excess profits. While the proposal has sparked debate, particularly around wholesale access and the role of Woolworths, it has also renewed public conversation about how to create a fairer, more competitive grocery market. Closer to home, we’re a starting our series on where to buy NZ‑grown pantry staples. This week we feature Bin Inn on Crawford Street, which offers a range of locally grown flours and legumes, and the ability to refill your own containers for a low‑waste shop. And for growers across the motu, earlybird tickets are now available for a national hui hosted by Kai Rotorua, bringing together fruit, nut, and vegetable growers to share knowledge, explore business and community models, and strengthen networks that support regional food resilience.
